Principle

FTIR offers quantitative and qualitative analysis for organic and inorganic samples. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) identifies chemical bonds in a molecule by producing an infrared absorption spectrum.

Theory

FTIR is an effective analytical instrument for detecting functional groups and characterizing covalent bonding information.When a sample is irradiated with IR energy, vibrations are caused within the molecule. This may cause a change in the dipole moment of the molecule, resulting in IR absorption. The pattern of these absorptions for a molecule is the IR spectrum and generally unique for a particular compound.  Comparison of the IR spectrum of an unknown material with that of a known standard is a powerful identification tool.
