As per Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MDWS), more than 50,000 habitations in 25 states in India are affected due to excess Iron in groundwater. Precipitation of soluble iron by oxidation with air followed by sedimentation and filtration is a relatively simple process used for removal iron from groundwater. Based on this process NEERI has designed hand pump attachable iron removal plant with 1 cubic meter per hr. hydraulic loading. The plant is suitable for 250 persons with 40 lpcd and 10 hrs of operation. The dimensions of the plant are 135 cm diameter and 150 cm height.
The novel features
- The system treats the water with Iron content in the range of 1 – 30 mg//L. The treated water is with iron content below the drinking water standard (BIS: 10550: 2012) of 0.3 mg/L.
- Simple and Low-cost natural based system;
- High Efficiency
- No need of skilled operator, electric power and mechanical parts
- Negligible operational and very low maintenance cost
- Sustainable and no additional problems as no chemicals added for treatment.
- The capacity of the plant is 1 m3/hr which is suitable for 250 populations at the rate of 40 L per capita per day (lpcd) and 10 hours of daily operation.
- The plant is either constructed of Reinforced Concrete (RCC) or pre fabricated using Fiber-glass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) as per required situations.
- The major cost is involved in construction of the system which works out to be Rs. 50000 for RCC structure and Rs. 90000 for FRP structure

- Nearly 900 plants have been installed by PHED, Chhattisgarh which are working satisfactorily.
- The water supply agencies from other states are also shown interest in CSIR-NEERI’s IR plants.
