CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI) organized the Green Horizon Summit -2024 in the NEERI Auditorium on 10th December 2024 in association with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to mark the beginning of the One Week One Theme (OWOT) Campaign on Ecology, Environment, Earth & Ocean Sciences and Water (E3OW). This event was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Shri Ajit Kumar Saxena, CMD, MOIL Limited, Guest of Honour Dr. Anupam Agnihotri, Director, JNARDDC, Distinguished Guest Shri Shailesh Awale, Chairman-CII Vidarbha Zone, Dr. Atul Vaidya, Director, CSIR-NEERI, Dr. Sunil Singh, Director, CSIR-NIO, Dr. Kannan Srinivasan, Director, CSIR-CSMCRI, Shri Shree Jamdar, Vice Chairman-CII Vidarbha Zone, and Dr. Amit Bansiwal, Sr. Principal Scientist, CSIR-NEERI.
Addressing the participants, the Chief Guest Shri Saxena emphasized that while there are many environmental issues, there is a lack of adequate expertise, making events like this essential to bridge the gap. He commended the participation of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), highlighting the importance of direct engagement with industry to tackle environmental challenges effectively. Shri Saxena expressed hope that pragmatic and implementable solutions would emerge from such events to address issues related to ecology, environment and water. He also underscored the need to involve society, as environmental problems are both pervasive and complex.
Emphasizing the importance of responsible production and consumption, the Guest of Honour Dr. Agnihotri, warned that if current trends continue, it may become difficult for life to survive on earth by 2050. He noted that India is expected to be significantly impacted by the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) in its exports of aluminum, iron and steel, as Europe is a major market for these commodities. Dr. Agnihotri urged industries, academia and research institutes to collaborate in achieving the target of carbon neutrality by 2070.
Highlighting the importance of R&D in industry, the Distinguished Guest, Shri Awale, urged CSIR-NEERI to undertake research initiatives tailored to industries in Maharashtra, particularly in the Vidarbha region. He expressed hope that the innovative solutions discussed at this event would contribute to making Nagpur greener and transforming it into a role model city.
Dr. Kannan Srinivasan, Director, CSIR-CSMCRI advocated for the convergence of ideas and expertise to create synergy between the competencies of CSIR institutes in addressing challenges related to ecology, environment and water. He also provided an overview of the role of CSIRCSMCRI in water management.
Dr. Sunil Singh, Director, CSIR-NIO emphasized the need for research to translate into practical applications. He remarked that while significant knowledge and wisdom are being generated, their transformation into impactful outcomes has not met expectations, despite strong research publication outputs.
Earlier, Dr. Atul Vaidya, Director, CSIR-NEERI, in his welcome address, shared that CSIRNEERI has recently undertaken twelve projects aimed at resolving industrial challenges and providing technological solutions.
He encouraged the participants to engage in productive discussions to address the issues faced by industries effectively.
Dr. Amit Bansiwal, Sr. Principal Scientist, CSIR-NEERI briefed the participants about the One Week One Theme Event, organized to engage various stakeholders through a series of activities. He also discussed the role of CII in collaborating with CSIR-NEERI to explore potential partnerships with industries.
Shri Shree Jamdar, Vice Chairman-CII Vidarbha Zone proposed the vote of thanks and Dr. Debishree Khan, Scientist, CSIR-NEERI conducted the proceedings.
The inaugural session was followed by panel discussions on water and wastewater management, environmental sustainability and decarbonization strategies, and solid waste management and circular economy. The event witnessed the participation of CSIR scientists, representatives from various organizations, industries and policy makers.
