Dr. S. Venkata Mohan has been the Director of the CSIR-National Institute of Environmental Engineering (CSIR-NERI), Nagpur, since January 2025. Previously, he was a Scientist at the CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT), Hyderabad, a position he held since 1998. He holds a B.Tech in Civil Engineering, an M.Tech in Environmental Engineering, and a Ph.D. from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati. He has been a Visiting Professor at Kyoto University, Japan, and an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. |

Dr. Mohan’s research addresses human-induced environmental challenges through a sustainability-driven framework, integrating environmental bioengineering. He employs a nexus-based approach to biomanufacturing, advancing low-carbon energy, bio-based chemicals, and sustainable materials. His expertise spans advanced waste remediation, biorefineries, bioelectrochemical systems, life cycle analysis, and circular bioeconomy strategies. His work has led to significant technological advancements, including the development and implementation of full-scale and pilot-scale systems for effluent and sewage treatment, acidogenic biohydrogen production, waste biorefinery, hybrid CO2 biosequestration, and bioelectro-catalytic processes for environmental remediation and sustainable energy solutions. Dr. Mohan has authored over 450 research articles, a monograph, a book, 60 book chapters, and five edited volumes. He holds 16 patents and has supervised 42 Ph.D. students. His research has been cited over 36,000 times, with an h-index of 102. Dr. Mohan is the recipient of several prestigious accolades, including the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the INAE-SERB Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellowship, and the DBT-Tata Innovation Fellowship, Kyung Hee International Fellows, VASVIK Industrial Research Award, ProSPER.NET-Scopus Young Researcher Award in Sustainable Development for year 2010, NASI-Scopus Young Scientist Award in Earth, Oceanographic & Environmental Sciences and NDRF-IEI Environmental Engineering Design Award, among others. He is an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India (FNASc), the Indian National Academy of Engineering (FNAE), the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Academy of Sciences, and The Biotech Research Society of India (FBRSI). He also serves on the editorial boards of several leading scientific journals and is the Editor-in-Chief of Bioresource Technology Reports. |
