Dr. S. Venkata Mohan has taken over as Director of the CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI). He assumed charge on January 30, 2025. Before this appointment, Dr. Mohan was a Chief Scientist at the CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT), Hyderabad. He has been associated with CSIR-IICT since 1998 and has made significant contributions to the fields of environmental engineering and sustainability. Dr. Mohan holds a B.Tech in Civil Engineering and M.Tech Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering. He has also served as a Visiting Professor at Kyoto University, Japan, and as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. His research focuses on sustainability and the circular bioeconomy, with pioneering work in bioenergy, decarbonization, microbial electrochemical systems, biorefineries, and waste valorization, which has been implemented in multiple pilot-scale projects. |

With an impressive academic background, Dr. Mohan has authored over 450 research papers, 64 book chapters, and five books. He holds 16 patents and has received more than 36,000 citations, with an h-index of 103. He has supervised 42 Ph.D. scholars, and his contributions have been recognized through prestigious honors and awards such as the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the INAE-SERB Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellowship, and the Tata Innovation Fellowship. Dr. Mohan is an elected Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, the National Academy of Sciences India, and several other esteemed academies. Notably, he has been ranked among the world’s top 2 percent of researchers by Stanford University. As the new Director of CSIR-NEERI, Dr. Mohan aims to address critical environmental challenges, advance the country’s sustainable development initiatives, and foster innovative solutions. |
