Gel electrophoresis is a method for separation and analysis of macromolecules (DNA, RNA and proteins) and their fragments, based on their size and charge. It differ from horizontal electrophoresis where Polyacrylamide gels are run in a horizontally while here it is in vertical configuration.

Application:

Estimation of the size of DNA molecules following restriction enzyme digestion.
Analysis of PCR products.
Separation of restricted genomic DNA prior to Southern transfer or of RNA prior to Northern
